We are all capable of cultivating care
On the ways we all make an impact, and the future of this newsletter
Let’s be honest: I’ve had trouble keeping this newsletter consistent. And as I’ve asked myself why, I think it’s because I gave myself too wide of a an assignment. What to sit down and share felt like it could be anything, and so… it became nothing.
But last week as I was looking through some old Notion pages (the digital equivalent of sorting through your old notebooks), I found a list I’d made called “Ordinary people who changed the world.” I wanted to explore these stories of how change gets made by seemingly ordinary folks, as a way to inspire each of us to take our own steps for change. And it clicked into place.
I started out writing some exploratory articles on specific topics. But that felt like I was getting ahead of myself. A lot of people do that already, and better than I do. What I’m really interested in is collectively learning about ways to create a better world and then putting that knowledge into action.
There are plenty of people sharing knowledge, and I’ll continue to link out to them, read their books (by myself as well as with my book club), and share tidbits of what I learn with y’all. But I think where I’d like to focus is sharing stories of how real people just like you are turning that knowledge into change in the world around them, in our shared world.
To start, I’ll rotate between two styles. I’ll share direct interviews with folks, like the first one I shared with Bronwyn exploring queerness, softness, and how to create a friend group by doing things you love. Then I’ll do some research and exploring on folks we may not be able to talk to, but who have had an impact on our world, and work to tell their stories. We’ll see where that takes us.
Thank you for being here, even for something sporadic and shifting. Sometimes we have to feel our way into things, and it isn’t always as graceful as it could be. But that’s part of the journey 😅
See you next week, with the next recorded interview 😘 Drop a comment if there are any people you know about who’ve made change that you think deserve to be better known, and I’ll add them to my list.
with love,
riles
